Non-negotiable Rules
There are some things that we all need to live into while being at an Episcopal children's or youth event, but even these have finer points. These finer points need to be discussed by the adult mentors with the Program Director ahead of time, along with consequences. You must figure that out ahead of time, so that you are consistent and everyone knows what they will be.
Norms of Behavior
What are the expectations within the community? In my family you could borrow each other's hair brush - in my friend's home, her sisters would have been irate with such behavior. If things are unspoken rules, how do new comers and those not in charge know them? After the norms are decided upon, remember that everyone is different and some people can't control their behavior as well as others. When people go outside of what is expected, gently guide them back, if they're able to go. For instance:
Creating a Community Covenant with the Norms of Behavior
Christians are a people of the Covenant - we understand that promises can be made between two parties. We are also a people called into Community. Each community has slightly different behaviors. If you want people to feel as though they are an active member of your community, work together to create a covenant. |
