Why should I insist on Background Checks and Safeguarding Training for myself? Two reasons 1) It covers and protects you. In the training you will learn how to work with the children and youth in a healthy and appropriate way. This helps in false allegations. 2) If you insist that you participate in this, you can insist that everyone participates in this. Background checks and Safeguarding training are only the first steps in taking care of our children, but they are also, often, the strongest.
Background Checks should include:
Criminal records check (conducted every 5 years)
Sexual offender registry check (conducted every 5 years)
Driving or Motor Vehicle records check, if the person will be transporting children or youth
May include a financial background check, if the person will be handling money
Criminal Records Check In the State of Michigan, you can have this done with a free service called ICHAT (in other states, contact the state police for information) Click for ICHAT
For a more comprehensive background check (for instance, a paid employee or someone new to the State of Michigan), we recommend this service (it does cost money, but it is very thorough): Oxford Document Management Company
