Background checks do not "catch" all previous criminal behavior, nor do they guarantee that each employee is a law-abiding, upstanding citizen. But they DO weed out some people and show all candidates how important you think the safety of all is. And if you don't do a background check and an employee or volunteer has been convicted of a crime and does the same crime on your property or as an employee or volunteer, you don't have a legal leg to stand on. We must do all we can to secure the safety of those in our charge. This is just one step.
